Firms have been urged to ensure they have adequate data management strategies to ensure that they do not become victoms of data loss. Dr Stephen Hill of accountants Horwath Clark Whitehill ahs urged companies to always backup data and to also adopt data duplication strategies.

Writing for the website freshbusinessthinking.com: "Take regular back ups of the information on your computer system and keep them in a separate place so that if you lose your computers, you don't lose the information."

Dr Hill also advises companies to keep hold of old computers until all the personal information on them has been securely removed.

According to figures from the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO), more than 800 breaches of data security have been recorded in the UK over the past two years, many of these occur when firms upgrade or throw out obsolete systems.
